About Marquetry
Marquetry is an ancient craft developed to add decoration mainly to furniture.
In modern times Marquetry has been used more as a form of art to create pictures. Thin wood veneers are cut into pieces which fit together to make up the image. This "jigsaw" of pieces is glued firmly onto a backing and then sanded smooth. The piece is then varnished to protect the surface and may be framed.
Few people today practise Marquetry skills so that pieces such as those show here are quite rare.
